Planning for the New Year - Get Real About What You Can Do

My last post was about taking inventory of where you practice is now.  If you've done that, chances are you're thinking that there's more that you need to do, and you may be wondering how it's possible to do more.

As another Mark I know, Mark Silver says, it’s time to feel our neediness and humility – to “try on the idea that you aren’t superhuman.”  You probably feel that you’re responsible for everything, for making sure that every aspect of your practice runs the way it’s supposed to, particularly if you’re a solo practitioner or if you’re the managing partner.  You may think that you’re the only one that can get it done right.  But take a step back, and try on the idea that perhaps what needs to be different in 2006 is that you need to find ways to have others share some of the load.

Once you’ve gotten honest about where you are, about what you’re lacking and what hasn’t materialized in your practice, it’s time to make a new plan and take it one step at a time.  As Mark Victor Hansen reminded me this week, “You don’t have to get it perfect – you just have to get it going.”
